Despite that game’s success, it still wasn’t exactly one of the most memorable video game stories out there, and not on par with say, the Uncharted series in that regard.
The Tomb Raider video game reboot, which this movie is be based on to some extent, was good, but mostly for its gameplay systems. Again, the cast is excellent, I just hope the final product is more than a generic action film, which is the vibe I’m currently getting.
Will this new Tomb Raider be it? I hope so, but this trailer didn’t reassure me. Despite high profile releases the past few years, we are still looking for our first truly great video game movie adaptation, in my opinion. But director pedigree is far from a guarantee when it comes to making video game films, as Duncan Jones’ Warcraft demonstrates, and the same goes for impressive trailers, something Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed movie had, but the final product was still lacking. It was…fine, but nothing revolutionary, and I’m hoping he’s able to create something more compelling here. The Norwegian is best known for his film The Wave, about a crushing tidal wave wiping out a town, and I actually went out of my way to watch it when I heard he was directing this film.
I am also unsure about Roar Uthaug in the director’s chair, despite having one of the coolest names of all time. I stand by my original take that it all comes across as a bit generic, as the longer version does not change that). The structure is the same, just with a few more scenes to flesh it out.
